Congratulations to James Necrews-Morgan, Ira Go, Sophie McFenton, BJ Pasion, Josh Embradura, Steffan Cushion and David Kennedy for completing the expedition section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award last weekend. They spent four days walking along a planned route through the eastern side of the Brecon Beacons, covering a total distance of 80 km and ascending at least 500m each day. Each participant also had to carry a large rucksack containing the equipment they would need to prepare hot meals and camp each night.
Everyone in the group has worked extremely hard over the past 10 months to prepare for this experience, completing training walks and expeditions in Gower, Neath Valley, Pembrokeshire, Llandovery and the Brecon Beacons, and it was great to see all of their hard work pay off. Their assessor was very impressed with their varied menus, the unusual aim for their journey (recreating and recording scenes from ‘Of Mice and Men’) and their efficiency in packing up camp to set off on time each morning. It was really pleasing to see everyone still smiling and in good spirits at lunchtime on their final day, especially considering they were about to ascend Pen y Fan.
A huge thank you to the DofE Supervision team of Miss Crabb, Mr Walters, Miss Thomas and Miss John for all the time and effort they have put in to the Gold DofE programme this year. Hopefully this is the first of many successful DofE expeditions by Bishop Vaughan pupils.
