Bishop Vaughan School pupils enjoyed another Masterclass from Swansea University’s Engineering department today. Dr Sean Walton, a researcher at the university, visited the school to discuss his work on optimisation in Engineering. The pupils were then challenged to apply the principles of optimisation into creating a tower that could hold the most weight whilst costing the least in materials – the materials being marshmallows and spaghetti. Whilst the contest did get quite heated at times, with some allegations of industrial espionage, the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session. Many thanks to Dr Walton and his assistant, Steph, for giving up their time today (and for letting us eat the leftover marshmallows!).
