The Year 12 Book ‘n’ Brew Club hosted speakers from PEN Cymru, an organisation that promotes literature and defends freedom of expression worldwide.
The special guest during the talk was Salih Agir Qoseri, a Kurdish poet and translator, who discussed linguistic rights with the students, specifically limits on the use of the Kurdish language. He also discussed his work translating the novels of George Orwell into Kurdish. This was of particular interest to the Book ‘n’ Brewers, as Orwell’s ‘1984’ was the first book read by members of the club. The talk was a fascinating insight into the importance of literature in politics, culture and identity. The Book ‘n’ Brew Club hopes to develop further links with PEN Cymru so that their love of books can be utilised to help others.
